Antibes makes a less theatrical promise than Cannes and a less obvious logistical one than Nice. That is exactly why it works: old town, beach, local life and rail access sit together without turning every day into a project-management exercise.
If Nice feels too urban and Cannes too staged, Antibes is probably your answer. For a first trip without a car, it is our strongest alternative to Nice.
Antibes as a base
The old town is walkable, the station is close enough to make day trips realistic and the sea does not require an expedition. You can spend one full day without transport, then take the train to Nice or Cannes the next morning.
Evenings feel more local and less polished than Cannes. That is a feature if you want a seaside town rather than an hotel showroom.
Beaches: a genuine advantage
Antibes has sandy beaches accessible from town, which changes the rhythm of a stay. La Gravette is particularly easy to combine with an old-town day. Juan-les-Pins adds another beach-led mood, with more resort energy and nightlife.
Do not automatically combine Antibes, Juan-les-Pins and the entire Cap into one day because the map has placed them politely next to each other. Geography occasionally has a poor sense of humour.
Cap d’Antibes: beautiful, less immediate
The Cap is a destination in itself: hotels, coves, villas and walks. It complements Antibes perfectly but does not behave like its centre. Stay on the Cap and you choose more calm and hotel time; stay in Antibes and you choose walking, old-town life and the station.
Antibes and the Cap are neighbours, not synonyms.
Choose the rhythm first. A taxi between two beautiful places remains a taxi.
Transport: excellent for the west, still easy towards Nice
Antibes station makes Nice and Cannes simple. For a trip focused on the western Riviera, the logic is strong. Monaco and Menton remain possible, but Nice becomes the more central base if eastern days dominate the plan.
A car becomes useful when the itinerary shifts towards isolated beaches, inland villages or harder-to-reach Cap addresses. In central Antibes it can mostly become something expensive you pay to park.
Where to stay: Mametas still needs more mid-range options
Our current shortlist is strong on Cap d’Antibes, with the Cap d’Antibes Beach Hotel and La Villa Cap d’Antibes. What we still lack are defendable options in Antibes itself, especially at more reasonable prices.
Antibes or Cannes?
Choose Cannes for palaces, the Croisette, private beaches and a more concentrated glamorous stay. Choose Antibes for a stronger old town, a less performative atmosphere and a better balance between sightseeing, beach and everyday life.
For a first four- or five-day trip, we would choose Antibes before Cannes if Nice is off the table. Cannes will survive this further humiliation.
