Gay French Riviera: where should you actually stay?

The real choice is not “gay hotel or normal hotel?” but whether you want a city base, an explicitly gay stay, or the western Riviera on your doorstep. Those are three different holidays.

Best first base: NiceNo car, strongest LGBTQ+ infrastructure, easiest trains east and west.
Best explicit gay stayLa Connexion, inland from Cannes, if a men-only retreat matters more than city logistics.
Cannes wins on geographyChoose it when the west (Antibes, Lérins, Grasse, Esterel) is the real trip.
THE MAMETAS TAKE

For most first-time gay travellers: stay in Nice. If the accommodation itself is the point, a dedicated gay guesthouse can beat the city. If the western Riviera is the point, Cannes can beat both.

Choose the type of stay first

Nice Rainbow Côte d’Azur is a welcome label. The current official directory lists 34 accommodation options. Mametas uses the label as one useful signal, then sorts stays by the kind of trip they suit.

Gay-only or community stay

Mametas take: choose this profile only if the accommodation itself is part of the LGBTQ+ experience. Otherwise, a central Nice hotel is usually easier.

Nice or Cannes?

Nice if you want bars, community infrastructure, no-car day trips and one base for the whole coast. Cannes if beaches, Lérins, Antibes and the western Riviera dominate the plan and nightlife matters less.

With a car vs without one

No carNice. The answer is almost boringly clear.
Car + community sceneStill Nice, unless parking becomes the dominant problem.
Car + retreatLa Connexion becomes a credible alternative.

FAQ

What is the Nice Rainbow label?

An official welcome programme used by Nice Côte d’Azur. It is a useful signal of explicit LGBTQ+ welcome; it does not mean the hotel is gay-only or that most guests will be LGBTQ+.

Are there gay-only hotels near Nice?

The clearest dedicated option in this guide is La Connexion, inland from Cannes. In Nice itself, Blue Angels is a very small men-only B&B rather than a conventional hotel.

Which area of Nice is best for gay nightlife?

Old Nice, Garibaldi and the Port side keep the best evening addresses closest. If nightlife matters, prioritise walkability over a seafront postcode.
