Gay French Riviera: the useful version

Forget “where is the gay Riviera?” The question that matters is “where should I base myself, and how do I use the coast without turning the whole trip into LGBTQ+ logistics?”

Best single base: NiceStrong transport, visible LGBTQ+ ecosystem and the easiest access to both sides of the coast.
West: Antibes + CannesEasy from Nice; worth a separate base only if the western Riviera is the main event.
East: Monaco + MentonSimple train days. No need to invent a separate LGBTQ+ itinerary for every stop.
THE MAMETAS TAKE

For a first trip, sleep in Nice and travel out. Nice has the scene when you want it, and the rest of the time it simply works as a base.

Editorial recommendation

The coast in one table

PlaceWhen it makes senseLGBTQ+ layer
NiceBest first base, especially without a car.Nice Rainbow, bars, clubs, labelled hotels and the clearest year-round ecosystem.
CannesIf most saved places are west of Nice.Use the city for Cannes, Antibes, Lérins and the western Riviera rather than for a stronger gay scene.
Saint-TropezAs a deliberate detour.Go for Saint-Tropez itself.
Monaco + MentonEasy eastbound train days.Use Nice for the LGBTQ+ infrastructure; use these towns for what they do best.
Villefranche + Cap-FerratReset days. The label matters less: bay, water, paths and a slower rhythm are the point.

Gay French Riviera FAQ

Is Nice gay friendly?

Nice has the Riviera’s clearest LGBTQ+ visitor infrastructure, including the Nice Rainbow programme and labelled establishments.

Is there a gay beach in Nice?

The useful answer depends on access and current local use; see the dedicated no-car beach guide rather than assuming one beach works for every trip.

When is Nice Pride?

Event dates change. Check the current Nice / LGBTQ+ agenda before booking around Pride.

A note for queer women, trans and non-binary travellers

This guide currently has more concrete nightlife detail for gay men because that is where we can verify the most dedicated venues. Do not read fewer venue cards as “nothing for you”. For current community events, mixed LGBTQIA+ nights and support, use Nice Côte d’Azur’s live LGBTQIA+ calendar and the Centre LGBTQIA+ Côte d’Azur; then use the ordinary Nice evening guide for the rest of the night. We would rather say where our coverage is strongest than pretend one men-only club represents everybody.
