Gay beaches around Nice without a car

Three very different answers: one easy and serviced, one rocky and local, one properly wild. The phrase “gay beach” hides rather a lot of logistics.

Easiest: CastelCentral Nice, Nice Rainbow-labelled, with loungers, restaurant and services.
Most local: Coco BeachPublic rocks east of the Port, with a long LGBTQ+/naturist reputation.
Most explicit: Saint-Laurent-d’ÈzeThe established gay/naturist cove, but with the most demanding access.
THE MAMETAS TAKE

Castel for ease, Coco for an uncomplicated local swim, Saint-Laurent-d’Èze for the gay/naturist beach experience. These are not three versions of the same beach; access and services are completely different.

Castel Plage

The easy answer.

Below Castle Hill, Castel is the simplest private beach to fold into a day in Old Nice. The Nice Côte d’Azur Tourist Office currently lists it with the Nice Rainbow label.

TypePrivate pebble beach with the public Castel beach immediately beside it.
ServicesLoungers, parasols, restaurant, supervised swimming and beach-equipment rental.

Coco Beach

Free, rocky and more local.

Coco Beach is not an officially zoned gay beach. It is a public rocky swimming area east of the Port with a long LGBTQ+/naturist reputation in local and specialist guides. Come for the water and Cap de Nice first.

AccessFrom Port Lympia, follow Boulevard Franck Pilatte east. Expect steps and uneven ground at the water.
TypeRocks and small swimming areas, with no sand and no rows of loungers.
ServicesVery little on site. Bring drinking water and suitable footwear.
SafetyNice city authorities explicitly warn against diving from the rocks at Coco Beach.

Saint-Laurent-d’Èze

The actual gay/naturist option, with instructions.

The public beach at Saint-Laurent-d’Èze is already more secluded than Nice. The gay/naturist area continues towards the coves in the direction of Cap Estel. Specialist gay guides have documented it for years; the access is considerably less polished than a beach club.

AccessDescend from the lower Corniche towards the public beach, pass beneath the railway, then continue on the coastal path towards the coves.
No carBus 607 from Nice currently serves the Saint-Laurent-d’Èze area. Re-check the route number and timetable on the day.
TerrainSteps, walkway and rocks. Proper shoes recommended; not suitable for limited mobility.
ServicesNo useful services at the gay/naturist coves: bring water, sun protection and what you need.

For the prettiest swimming day, leave central Nice

Villefranche-sur-Mer and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat are the stronger choices when the goal is simply beautiful water and a slower day. They are not “gay beaches”, and they do not need to be. This page covers the gay-specific options; the best swimming is a separate question.

VillefrancheEasy by train or bus, calm bay, straightforward without a car.
Cap-FerratBetter for coves, coastal walking and a full slow day.
Stay in NiceChoose Castel or Coco Beach when you want zero extra logistics.

FAQ

Is there a gay beach in Nice?

Castel is the clearest central option with an explicit Nice Rainbow signal. Coco Beach is a more informal free swim spot rather than a labelled gay beach.

Is Saint-Laurent-d’Èze a naturist beach?

It is the strongest naturist-oriented option in this guide, but access is more involved than the Nice beaches and conditions should be checked before you set out.

Can I get there without a car?

Yes for the beaches covered here, but “possible” and “effortless” are not the same thing. Castel is easiest; Saint-Laurent-d’Èze requires the most planning.
