Matisse Rosary Chapel

Matisse did not simply hang a few works here. He designed the place, the light, the furniture and even the liturgical vestments.

MAMETAS SAYS

One of the rare places where “total work of art” is not just press-release language. Small scale, strong identity, and worth the detour to Vence.

Why we go

Between 1948 and 1951, Matisse designed the chapel as a whole: architecture, stained glass, ceramic panels, furniture and liturgical objects. The way the whole project holds together is the real reason to come.

What to actually look at

The coloured light from the windows, the contrast with the large black drawings on ceramic and the simplicity of the space. Here the whole matters more than twenty isolated details.
