The plan
Default to this
Nice base, 3-5 days, coastal towns, museums, accessible beaches, Monaco, Menton, Antibes and Cannes.
The smart compromise
Mostly coastal trip, plus Saint-Paul, Mougins, hinterland, isolated beaches or several villages in one day.
Only when the trip demands it
Remote villa, hinterland-heavy itinerary, late hours off the main axes, rural multi-stop days or specific family logistics.
When the car is mostly baggage
In central Nice, Cannes or Antibes, and on a trip built around the TER (regional train), a car adds parking, traffic and the question of when to drive back. The coastal rail spine makes many days simpler without one.
When it becomes useful
Once you leave that rail spine, the answer changes: inland villages, certain beaches, panoramic roads, hiking trailheads and days combining places that are poorly linked to each other.
Three real cases, with numbers
Parking for the day
Nice. On-street parking is capped at 2 hours 15 minutes: the first two hours are free once a day, ticket required, then a €25 penalty if you overstay. A full day in town ends in an underground car park, or in a tram park-and-ride, where parking is included with a €3.40 return or a €7 day pass.
Monaco. In public car parks the first hour is free, then about €7.30 for two hours and €24 for the day (late-2024 tariff, reviewed every year). By TER, Nice-Monaco costs €6.10 and takes about twenty minutes, with 65 return services a day.
Verdict: the train wins, no contest.
The hill village
Without a car. TER to Cagnes-sur-Mer (€5, 15 minutes), then ZOU! bus 655 to Saint-Paul village or Fondation Maeght, 20 to 30 minutes. Roughly every 30 minutes on weekdays, every 45 minutes on Saturdays, every 40 to 50 minutes on Sundays.
By car. Metered car parks around the village: €2 an hour, €5.50 for three hours, free after 7pm. The Fondation Maeght car park is free.
Verdict: doable without a car for Saint-Paul alone. A car earns its keep if you chain Saint-Paul, Vence and other villages in one day.
The peninsula
Without a car. Bus 15 from Nice (Lycée Masséna stop), €1.70 a ride, to Saint-Jean harbour; the Passable-Rothschild stop serves Villa Ephrussi, until 11.45pm in July and August. Or TER to Beaulieu-sur-Mer, then the same bus.
By car. Parking is free from October to April, paid from May to the end of September. The Villa Ephrussi car park is free but small.
Verdict: in summer, take the bus. Out of season, the car becomes easy again.
The sum that settles it
The PASS SudAzur Explore covers TER trains, Nice buses, ZOU! coaches and Monaco buses across the Alpes-Maritimes: €35 for 3 days, €50 for 7 days. Compare that with a rental car plus fuel and parking: for a coastal trip there is no contest. Keep the car budget for the one day that really earns it.
Do not rent a car for five days because one day needs it. Build the trip without it first, then add 24 or 48 hours if a real part of the holiday earns the hassle.
This page makes the call; the nuts and bolts live elsewhere. For tickets, fares, parking, rental and transport mechanics, use Taxis, ride-hailing and parking and Train or bus. For a hotel that really works without a car, use Stay without a car.
