Five days alone on the French Riviera: one base, no car
The solo advantage is not fitting more in. It is being able to drop half the plan without negotiating with anyone. This route uses Nice as one base and keeps every day easy to abort, extend or slow down.

Five days is enough to understand the Riviera if you stop trying to collect it. Nice plus four deliberate directions beats changing hotels every night.
The itinerary
Land, orient yourself, do not “start sightseeing” at 16:00.
Take tram line 2 from the airport, check in, walk Masséna → Cours Saleya → the sea → Port/Garibaldi. Book one easy evening activity if you still have energy: cinema, opera or comedy. Airport tram info →
Make the first excursion absurdly easy.
The TER (regional train) from Nice to Villefranche takes about five minutes on average. Start with the old town and bay, then choose a coastal walk or Villa Ephrussi rather than stacking everything. Return to Nice for dinner. Train info →
Old town, Picasso, sea. Enough.
About 20 minutes by TER on average. Walk from the station into the old town, do the Picasso Museum, Gravette or the ramparts, then a late lunch. If the weather is perfect, stay for dinner; otherwise return to Nice before the evening crowds. Train info →
Do the east in one direction.
Monaco is roughly 20 minutes from Nice by TER and Menton roughly 40. Start early in Monaco, then continue east to Menton for old town, gardens or a long lunch. If you are tired, skip one. Monaco train → · Menton train →
Cannes + Lérins, or a second proper day in Nice.
If you still want movement, Cannes is about 35 minutes by TER and the Lérins Islands give the day a clear purpose. If you are done with logistics, stay in Nice: Matisse, Cimiez, a long lunch, swim, then a ticketed evening. The correct choice is the one you still want to do at breakfast.
What we deliberately left out
No Saint-Tropez, no three-village bus puzzle, no hotel change and no “must” sunset location. They are all possible. They are not necessary for a strong first solo trip.
If you are nervous on day one
Do less. Walk the hotel-to-tram route in daylight, buy tomorrow’s train ticket, save the emergency numbers and pick one dinner close to the hotel. Familiarity grows extremely quickly once the geography is no longer abstract.
