THE SIMPLE RULE

No flag on the mast means no lifeguard. In season, pick a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red-and-yellow flags. Out of season nobody is watching: stay close to shore, and never alone.

The flags, current version

France changed its flag system in 2022. Not all the old signals still apply.

GreenLifeguarded swimming, no apparent danger.
YellowLifeguarded swimming, limited or marked danger: rough sea, currents.
RedSwimming prohibited.
PurpleWater pollution, dangerous species (jellyfish included) or a protected marine area.
Red and yellowA two-colour flag, set out in pairs to mark the lifeguarded zone. Swim between the two.
No flagLifeguard post closed, nobody watching. Lowered flag: lifeguards out on a rescue.

When beaches are lifeguarded

NICE · 2026 SEASON

Eleven beaches, July to mid-September

1 July to 31 August: Sainte-Hélène, Bambou, Magnan, Poincaré, Blue Beach and Beau Rivage. Until 13 September: Ponchettes, Tour Rouge, Forum, Carras and Centenaire.

9am to 6.30pm in July and August, 9am to 6pm in September. In October, no lifeguards at all. Dates change every year; the city publishes them before summer.

Antibes – Juan-les-Pins runs 15 lifeguard posts in summer, 9am to 7pm. Elsewhere (Cannes, Villefranche, Menton), check the town’s own dates before relying on them.

Water quality

Official results are published on baignades.sante.gouv.fr. In Nice the water is tested weekly from 1 June to 30 September. In 2025, 97% of bathing sites in the Alpes-Maritimes met the standard. After a heavy storm, precautionary closures can happen: purple flag or a sign, and you stay out. Mametas gives it a day or two after heavy rain.

Jellyfish

The local jellyfish, Pelagia noctiluca, mostly shows up in summer, pushed in by wind and currents. Conditions change within hours. ACRI’s crowd-sourced map, run from Sophia-Antipolis, gives a sense of recent sightings.

  1. Get out and rinse with sea water, never fresh water.
  2. Remove visible tentacles with tweezers or gloves, without crushing them.
  3. Cover with dry sand, let it dry, then scrape it off with a stiff card.
  4. Do not rub, and apply no cream or gel. Fainting, racing heart, dizziness or vomiting: call 15.

Pebbles, slope and boats

In Nice the pebble beach shelves steeply: the city puts out ropes to help people climb back out. Water shoes make the day easier, especially getting out. Bathing-only zones set by the towns are closed to boats and jet skis; the marked channels are theirs, at 5 knots. Do not swim in a channel.

Sea temperature

June22°C: the season really starts.
July-August23 to 23.5°C, the warmest water.
October19.5°C: still swimmable on good days.

Indicative averages in Nice. September is still 22°C, November 17.5°C; December to April, 13 to 15°C. For the rest of the weather, see Weather by season and When to go, month by month. To pick a beach, open the beach guide.
