Base in Nice, then buy one exceptional night if the hotel itself is the experience. La Pérouse keeps the romance without moving luggage; La Réserve is the do-nothing waterfront splurge. June and September are the easiest months to make the coast feel special rather than crowded.

Reference splurge: the hotel is the destination, so do not combine it with a packed sightseeing day.

Where to base yourselves
Why one base works: Nice–Villefranche averages about 5 minutes by TER (regional train), Nice–Monaco about 20 minutes and Nice–Cannes about 35 minutes on the checked timetable. Changing hotels every two nights usually adds luggage more than value.
A six-day rhythm that leaves room for a honeymoon
- Day 1: arrive and do not schedule a must-see.
- Day 2: Nice slowly.
- Day 3: Villefranche + Cap-Ferrat.
- Day 4: Monaco glamour or Antibes art + sea.
- Day 5: deliberately empty morning, then the big dinner.
- Day 6: Cannes or Èze depending on sand vs spectacle.
What is actually worth paying extra for
A real terrace, a room view you will use, a hotel worth staying in during the day, or a location that cuts out daily transport hassle. A generic “honeymoon package” is not automatically worth more than the right room.
The mistakes
- Changing hotel too often.
- Booking Èze for the photograph without thinking about evenings and transport.
- Assuming every Riviera beach is sandy.
- Planning Monaco, Èze and Saint-Tropez as if they were neighbouring metro stops.
