PRACTICAL · BOOKINGS

What should you actually book?

The Riviera rewards a little planning. A few well-chosen reservations are enough; leave the rest room to breathe.

Book earlySpecific hotels, private beaches, scarce restaurant tables and fixed-date boat excursions.
Book if usefulMajor museums and ferries when online tickets remove a queue or secure a time.
Do not overbookPublic beaches, coastal walks, markets and ordinary TER (regional train) travel do not need a spreadsheet.
THE MAMETAS RULE

If missing it would change the day, book it. If another good option exists ten minutes away, keep your freedom.

Book before the trip

HIGH SEASON • LIMITED INVENTORY

The hotel you actually want

If location matters, book the hotel before the itinerary becomes complicated. On a car-free trip, a room near Nice-Ville, Jean Médecin, Port Lympia or Cannes station can save more time than a marginally better pool ten kilometres away.

NICE • PRIVATE BEACHES

A specific private beach in July or August

If you specifically want Castel, Plage Amour or another named beach club, reserve the sunbed rather than assuming the Mediterranean has saved one for you. Castel takes online table and sunbed reservations; Plage Amour also offers online table and deckchair booking.

BOAT DAY TRIPS

Saint-Tropez by boat

No ambiguity here. Trans Côte d’Azur marks its 2026 Nice and Cannes to Saint-Tropez excursions as reservation required. The crossing runs on selected days outside peak summer, so this is the kind of day to book before you leave home.

Book online if it saves hassle

CANNES • LÉRINS

The islands: useful online, not always compulsory

Sainte-Marguerite is served by several companies from Cannes. Trans Côte d’Azur explicitly says individuals do not need a reservation for that crossing, although tickets can be bought online. Saint-Honorat is served by Planaria, which sells return tickets online.

Mametas call: buy ahead if you already know the day. Otherwise, do not build the trip around a crossing that individual travellers do not even need to book.

CULTURE

Museums: buy when there is an advantage

Fondation Maeght sells online tickets but says reservation is not compulsory for individual visitors. Villa Ephrussi recommends online booking. The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco sells tickets online, and Musée Picasso Antibes has e-ticketing.

Mametas call: for a fixed cultural day, buy online. For a flexible Nice afternoon, keep the museums flexible too.

Usually do not book

Public beaches: turn up, preferably before the crowd. Markets: definitely do not reserve Cours Saleya. Coastal walks: check weather and access. Ordinary local transport: buy the appropriate ticket when needed unless an online fare or pass actually saves money.

One exception: a restaurant that is the reason for the evening. If you would be really disappointed to miss it, reserve. If there are six other good tables nearby, let the evening decide.

The quick checklist
