World Explorations Museum

Cannes has a museum in a medieval castle on Le Suquet. Strangely, nobody shouts this at you at the airport.

MAMETAS SAYS

The setting is almost as interesting as the collection: the former castle of the Lérins monks, the Suquet lanes, courtyard, tower and panorama. Yes, Cannes also has walls older than a palace hotel.

Why we go

The museum holds collections connected with the Himalayas, the Arctic, Oceania, Africa, antiquities and Orientalism. The mix is curious and its museum history can feel dated, which makes it worth looking at with contemporary eyes.

What to actually look at

Climb the tower when access is open. The panorama puts Cannes back into geographical perspective: a bay, islands, an old quarter, and only then the yachts.
