Saint-Pierre Chapel by Cocteau

Small fishermen’s chapel, large artist ego, surprisingly good result. Cocteau left rather more than a signature here.

MAMETAS SAYS

A short visit that immediately improves a day in Villefranche. Do not cross the Riviera for it alone; if you are already on the harbour, go in.

Why we go

Jean Cocteau decorated the fishermen’s chapel of Saint-Pierre in 1956. The scenes mix Mediterranean life with episodes from Saint Peter’s story in an instantly recognisable graphic language.

What to actually look at

The five main painted scenes and the way they wrap around the small interior. The strength comes less from quantity than from the fit between the chapel, the harbour and the images.
